Local Statistics

A Woman's Place provided walk-in services (legal advocacy, counseling) to 374 clients, and sheltered 326 clients in fiscal year 2007. Of residential clients, 142 were children.

Champaign County Police received 4,142 calls on domestic violence incidents in 2004. (Project 18, 2005-2006)

A Woman's Fund, Inc. estimates that closer to 12,900 women in Champaign County are currently victims of domestic violence. (Based on hotline calls, national statistics, and the fact that the majority of women do not report domestic violence to the police.)

National Statistics

Intimate Partner Violence results in nearly 2 million injuries and 1,300 deaths nationwide every year (CDC 2003).

One study found that 44% of women murdered by their intimate partner had visited an emergency department within 2 years of the homicide. Of these women, 93% had at least one injury visit (Crandall et al. 2004).

During 2003, in Illinois, there was 1 reported domestic crime every 4 minutes and 12 seconds, or 342 per day (Illinois State Police, 2003).

Approximately 1 in 5 high school girls reported being abused by a boyfriend (Jay Silverman et al. 2001).

One study found that 46% of homeless women reported staying in an abusive relationship because they had nowhere to go (Wilder Research Center, 2004).

In approximately 90% of elder abuse cases, perpetrators are family members. (www.ncall.us, 2003).

71% of pet owners entering domestic violence shelters report that their batterer had threatened, injured or killed family pets (Ascione, Weber & Wood, 1997).

50% of men who commit acts of domestic violence also have substance abuse problems (Gondolf, 1995).
