Tour the Shelter
Each year, A Woman's Place provides walk-in counseling and legal
advocacy to about 400 victims of domestic violence, and provides shelter
to about 250 women and children each year.
|
Because of our community's size, it was decided that keeping our
location a secret would be impossible. Instead, we take strong security
measures to keep residents and staff safe. If you arrive at the shelter
during business hours, ring the bell at Door One. If you are coming to
the shelter at night, ring the bell at Door Two.
|
Women and children who have experienced domestic violence can stay in
our emergency shelter for up to six weeks. After that, residents can
apply for our transitional housing program, where they can stay for up
to two years while paying $60 per month into a savings plan that will be
returned to them when they leave.
|
Residents share a living room, dining room, kitchen, laundry
facilities, and children's room. They also meet for regular house
meetings and support groups. Mothers and children take part in children's
groups and meet with the children's advocates to explore ways to heal the
parenting relationship in the aftermath of abuse.
|
Residents have access to free individual counseling, medical advocacy,
legal advocacy, and the assistance of a case manager. This team of staff
can help residents explore their options and address needs such as
housing, transportation, childcare, mental health services, medical care,
and legal options such as orders of protection.
Volunteers regularly work inside the shelter to make it feel a little
more like home by adopting rooms to paint and decorate.
