Date Rape Drugs

Drugs have been used for years to make sexual assault easier and more acceptable. Alcohol used to be the primary "date rape drug", but gradually, other drugs have come into use. These drugs can have a similar effect and are often more dangerous.

We know that the majority of rapes are committed by acquaintances. However, the term, "date rape drug" may actually be a misnomer. In fact, the person who slips these drugs into drinks, food, etc. is often not a "date," but an unknown person.

It is illegal to possess or purchase most of these drugs, however, that does not diminish their existence or prevalence.

Victims of a drug-facilitated rape:
  • may not remember what happened
  • may feel very sick when they awaken
  • may be surprised that they feel so drunk when they only had one or two drinks
  • may awake disoriented and confused

As with any sexual assault, the survivor is NEVER to blame.
