About RCS
Our mission is to deconstruct rape myths and empower sexual assault
victims and survivors through crisis intervention, education, advocacy,
activism and counseling. RCS also works with victims' and survivors'
supportive friends and family members, allied professionals, and the
community at large to end the culture of sexual violence.
Rape Crisis Services offers help to survivors of sexual violence
and their significant others through:
- 24-Hour Hotline: The crisis hotline is staffed by
trained crisis counselors 24-hours a day, seven days a week and can be
reached at 217-384-4444. Callers outside of central Illinois may reach
the crisis center closest to them by dialing 800-656-HOPE.
- Counseling: Rape Crisis Services offers individual,
family, and group counseling on a short-term basis. Counseling services
are client-centered, and ultimately the client determines the direction
of counseling.
- Medical Advocacy: Trained advocates respond to area
medical facilities to provide emotional support and information, and to
ensure that needed medical assistance is obtained in the immediate
aftermath of a sexual assault.
- Legal Advocacy: Legal advocates are available to
accompany and support survivors throughout the entire legal process,
from the initial police report to the trial. Legal advocates provide
information on legal rights and procedures and advocate on the victim's
behalf with criminal justice personnel. They also assist survivors who
want to obtain civil protective orders, including Orders of Protection
and Civil No Contact Orders.
- Community Education: RCS offers workshops on sexual
violence for schools and community groups on topics including sexual
assault and sexual harassment. RCS can tailor presentations to meet the
specific needs of an audience.
- Professional Training: RCS conducts training for
service providers who work with survivors of sexual assault, including
police officers, school counselors, and health care professionals.
- Information and Referral: RCS is able to provide
extensive information on sexual violence, from statistics to coping
mechanisms. Additionally, RCS maintains contact with numerous resources
in order to best link individuals with services to meet their needs.
